Attrite \At*trite"\, a. [L. attritus, p. p. of atterere; ad +
   terere to rub. See {Trite}.]
   1. Rubbed; worn by friction. --Milton.

   2. (Theol.) Repentant from fear of punishment; having
      attrition of grief for sin; -- opposed to {contrite}.
