Clypeate \Clyp"e*ate\, a. [L. clupeatus, p. p. of clupeare to
   arm with a shield, fr. clupeus, clipeus shield.]
   1. (Bot.) Shaped like a round buckler or shield; scutate.

   2. (Zo["o]l.) Furnished with a shield, or a protective plate
      or shell.
