The gilthead ({Crenilabrus melops}), a fish of the British
coasts.
Gilthead \Gilt"head`\, n. (Zo["o]l.)
A marine fish. The name is applied to two species:
(a) The {Pagrus, or Chrysophrys, auratus}, a valuable food
fish common in the Mediterranean (so named from its
golden-colored head); -- called also {giltpoll}.
(b) The {Crenilabrus melops}, of the British coasts; --
called also {golden maid}, {conner}, {sea partridge}.

One of two or more species of European labroid fishes
({Crenilabrus melops}, and {Ctenolabrus rupestris}); --
called also {goldsinny}, and {goldney}.
Conner \Con"ner\, n. [Cf. {Cunner}.] (Zo["o]l.)
A marine European fish ({Crenilabrus melops}); also, the
related American cunner. See {Cunner}.
