Preter- \Pre"ter-\ [L. praeter past, beyond, originally a
   compar. of prae before. See {For}, prep.]
   A prefix signifying past, by, beyond, more than; as, preter-
   mission, a permitting to go by; preternatural, beyond or more
   than is natural. [Written also {pr[ae]ter}.]
