   Of or pertaining to Tartarus; hellish.

Tartareous \Tar*ta"re*ous\, a. [Cf. 1st {Tartarous}.]
   1. Consisting of tartar; of the nature of tartar.

   2. (Bot.) Having the surface rough and crumbling; as, many
      lichens are tartareous.
