Backslide \Back`slide"\, v. i. [imp. {Backslid}; p. p.

   [Back, adv. + slide.]
   To slide back; to fall away; esp. to abandon gradually the
   faith and practice of a religion that has been professed.

   Slipping back; falling back into sin or error; sinning.
