Bonfire \Bon"fire`\, n. [OE. bonefire, banefire, orig. a fire of
   bones; bone + fire; but cf. also Prov. E. bun a dry stalk.]
   A large fire built in the open air, as an expression of
   public joy and exultation, or for amusement.
