   califa), fr. Ar. khal[=i]fan successor, fr. khalafa to
   succed.]
   Successor or vicar; -- a title of the successors of Mohammed
   both as temporal and spiritual rulers, now used by the
   sultans of Turkey. [Written also {calif}.]
