Diffident \Dif"fi*dent\, a. [L. diffidens, -entis, p. pr. of
   diffidere; dif- = dis + fidere to trust; akin to fides faith.
   See {Faith}, and cf. {Defy}.]
   1. Wanting confidence in others; distrustful. [Archaic]
