Mediant \Me"di*ant\, n. [L. medians, p. p. of mediare to halve:
   cf. It. mediante, F. m['e]diante.] (Mus.)
   The third above the keynote; -- so called because it divides
   the interval between the tonic and dominant into two thirds.
