Nitrate \Ni"trate\, n. [Cf. F. nitrate.] (Chem.)
   A salt of nitric acid.

   {Nitrate of silver}, a white crystalline salt ({AgNO3}), used
      in photography and as a cauterizing agent; -- called also
      {lunar caustic}.
