Penitential \Pen`i*ten"tial\, a. [Cf. F. p['e]nitentiel.]
   Of or pertaining to penitence, or to penance; expressing
   penitence; of the nature of penance; as, the penitential
   book; penitential tears. ``Penitential stripes.'' --Cowper.

   A book formerly used by priests hearing confessions,
