Piteous \Pit"e*ous\, a. [OE. pitous, OF. pitos, F. piteux. See
   {Pity}.]
   1. Pious; devout. [Obs.]

            The Lord can deliver piteous men from temptation.

   2. Evincing pity, compassion, or sympathy; compassionate;
