Recalcitrant \Re*cal"ci*trant\, a. [L. recalcitrans, p. pr. of
   recalcitrare to kick back; pref. re- re- + calcitrare to
   kick, fr. calx heel. Cf. {Inculcate}.]
   Kicking back; recalcitrating; hence, showing repugnance or
   opposition; refractory.
