   -entis, p. pr. of stringere to draw or bind tight. See
   {Strain}.]
   Binding strongly; making strict requirements; restrictive;
   rigid; severe; as, stringent rules.

         They must be subject to a sharper penal code, and to a
         more stringent code of procedure.        --Macaulay.
