   1. Lacking, or not bearing, fruit; barren; destitute of
      offspring; as, a fruitless tree or shrub; a fruitless

   2. Productive of no advantage or good effect; vain; idle;
      useless; unprofitable; as, a fruitless attempt; a
      fruitless controversy.
