Hireling \Hire"ling\ (-l[i^]ng), n. [AS. h[=y]reling. See
   {Hire}, n., and {-ling}.]
   One who is hired, or who serves for wages; esp., one whose
   motive and interest in serving another are wholly gainful; a
   mercenary. ``Lewd hirelings.'' --Milton.
