Brigadier general \Brig`a*dier" gen"er*al\ [F. brigadier, fr.
   brigade.] (Mil.)
   An officer in rank next above a colonel, and below a major
   general. He commands a brigade, and is sometimes called, by a
   shortening of his title, simple a {brigadier}.
